The Maryland Center for Health Equity is proud to present the Barbershop Storybook Project, a series of comic books that take place in Prince George’s County, MD. The storylines are based on real people's stories during the height of the pandemic, and follows several families as they navigate the complexities of living in the era of COVID-19. The series will be distributed in barbershops and salons across the country, coming soon!

01 The Jacksons

The first book in the series tells the story of Antione Jackson, a young man living with his sister and her son. There is conflict in the Jackson household, but why?

02 Counselor Castillo

The second book tells the story of little Daniella, an elementary schooler who is having trouble at school. Guidance counselor, Ms. Castillo, meets with Mom to find out why.

03 Convenience for Some

In third book, Antione is back and meets Angel at a convenience store. Why does Angel need a hand from Antione?

Meet the Team

Dr. Stephen B. Thomas, Ph.D Director

Dr. Thomas is a Professor of Health Policy and Management and Director at the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity. One of the nation's leading scholars in the effort to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities, Dr. Stephen B. Thomas has applied his expertise to address a variety of conditions from which minorities generally face far poorer outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and HIV/AIDS.

Maggie Daly Project Manager

Maggie is a Faculty Research Assistant at the Maryland Center for Health Equity and serves as the project manager for the Barbershop Storybook Project. Maggie holds a BS in Community Health from the University of Maryland. Her research interests include improving equity in health services, social determinants of health, and community engaged research.

Jasmine Mitchell Co-Artistic Lead

Jasmine is a multi-disciplinary artist; she is a Writer, Director, and Storyteller. She is a proud 2nd gen immigrant from the island of Dominica Jasmine firmly believes that the stories we tell can be a tool for creating social change outside of the political arena. In her work she reflects the heart of God for the marginalized, with a focus Black women and families specifically. Jasmine is a graduate of University of Maryland, College Park where she received her B.A. in Theatre. You can find more of Jasmine's work at jasmineamitchell.com.

Marcus Ford Co-Artistic Lead

Marcus is a poet, filmmaker, and designer from Prince George’s County, MD. He is an alumnus of University of Maryland, College Park and strives to create a body of work that brings us closer to the future. You can find more of Marcus’s work at bonbasso.com

Joe Wade Original Concept Artist

Mr. Wade is an artist and retired correctional officer living in Texas. For more information about Mr. Wade see “A new national model? Barbershop offers coronavirus shots in addition to cuts and shaves.”
